Vocal Range Test
Find the lowest and highest notes you can sing comfortably. The test listens through your microphone, tracks the stable pitches you produce, and reports your range in note names and semitones.

Settings explained
- Now singing
- The note being detected right now, updated as you sing. It only appears for a stable, confident pitch, so a readout that flickers means the microphone is hearing something between notes rather than a note.
- Lowest note
- The lowest note in the whole test, taken from the pitches that were stable enough to count. It is reported as a note name in scientific pitch notation, so C3 is the C below middle C and C4 is middle C itself.
- Highest note
- The highest note from the same set of stable readings. It is measured the same way as the lowest, which is why both ends of the range can only be found by actually singing them.
- Range
- The distance between the lowest and highest note, counted in semitones. An octave is twelve, so a span of 24 semitones is two octaves. The figure is reported only when at least eight stable notes were captured, because a handful cannot distinguish a vocal range from a warm-up.
- Closest reference:
- The closest classical reference range for the notes you sang, chosen from six standard ranges by comparing both endpoints. It is a reference point, not a diagnosis: timbre, tessitura and training all affect voice type, and a comfortable range on one day is not a verdict on the voice itself.
How the range is measured
The test uses the same pitch engine as the tuner: YIN estimation through Essentia.js on 4096-sample frames, restricted to 55–1600 Hz, with frames below an RMS of 0.008 treated as silence and frames below 0.5 confidence thrown away. Each surviving frame is a pitch reading; only readings inside the measurable 55–1600 Hz window are eligible for the range. The lowest and highest of the whole session are then taken from the sorted list of readings with five per cent trimmed off each end, but only once at least forty readings have been collected — with fewer than forty, nothing is trimmed. Trimming is what stops a single misdetection, an octave slip on one frame, from defining the whole result. A session with fewer than eight stable readings reports no range at all rather than a guess.
Why the range moves from day to day
Sleep, hydration, how recently you ate, how much you have already sung and above all whether you warmed up will move both ends of the range, and the top end moves further than the bottom. That is normal and it is why a single run is a snapshot rather than a measurement of the voice. The figures are also sensitive to how the notes were sung: a lightly sung high note and a pushed one produce different readings, and the test only sees the pitch it is given, not the effort behind it. Run it several times under similar conditions, warm up first, and compare the results that repeat. The safety note on the page is not decoration — stop if anything feels strained and skip notes that hurt, because forcing the extremes is how people injure themselves doing exactly this.
What the voice type comparison means
Six classical reference ranges are compared with your result: bass at E2–E4, baritone at A2–A4, tenor at C3–C5, alto at F3–F5, mezzo-soprano at A3–A5 and soprano at C4–C6. The closest match is the one whose two endpoints together sit nearest to the two notes you sang, so it is decided by the distance to both ends of the range rather than by the span alone. That is deliberately crude, and the caveats matter: classical voice type depends on where a voice is comfortable across its whole compass, on timbre and on tessitura, and it is assigned by teachers over time, not measured in a two-minute test. Use the comparison as a starting point for finding repertoire in a sensible key, not as a label.
